January 1942
"Mein Leibling,
The past few months in this horrible land have been cold and dreadful. Herr Hauptmann will have me Court Marshaled if he gets wind of this but we are horribly under equipped for General Winter. The Panzers are so cold the tracks snap as soon as they are put in a forward motion! I must make this quick. We have received orders to clean and ready weapons. There are reports that the cold weather may break and warm up, I think High Command would like to take the town so they can keep their keisters nice and toasty when Sergent Winter comes back. There is no doubt that Ivan is thinking the same at this very moment. We have been issued a new weapon however. A newly developed fully automatic short round 7.92mm rifle with a 30 round magazine capacity! Oh how I can't wait to see Ivan turn tail and run back to the Steppes! Please keep the letters coming, they are an uplifting moment in this desolate wasteland.
My love to the children, Karl"

Dearest Mother and Father,
I hope this letter finds you in high spirits. The weather here has been bitterly cold but at least we have some basic shelter and issued cold weather gear to combat the elements. I've just been relieved of watch over the front lines and it's obvious the Germans are not as equipped as we are for the cold. The Commissar just made his rounds with the Vodka rations and informed us the weather may take a turn for the better and reach bearable temperatures. That only means the Fashisty's will want to make a push to overtake our positions in this town. It reminds me of our village so I feel I must defend it at all costs for Comrade Stalin!
Your son, Alexi.

Report from the front line-Gustav Sector
Probing actions taken against Soviet front lines towards main town objective. Encountered light defensive machine gun fire from fixed positions on outskirts of town. No retaliatory artillery encountered. Enemy armour heard in distance but faded away towards heavy action to north of town.
Night watch reported sporadic starburst flare and small arms fire. Minimal casualties.

General Zhukov,
Our intelligence services have intercepted a German communique that is indicating they are planning an attack on the town in the next couple of weeks. Exact date has not been completely determined but appears to be set for January 25th. Operation will not commence if temperatures are below -5 Degree Celcius.
We have sent our armor to the northern sectors and require reinforcements as soon as possible.
I eagerly await your reply.

Ya`ll know us dumb jarheads is always getting lost and showin up in the weirdest places. But like my daddy always said, `Just cuz you didn't start no fight don't mean you cant finish it.`` It`s funny, but I thought the Pacific would be warmer. Oh well, my new pal Tommy gets here later this week, should be a good excuse to bring him out and see if he can live up to my old buddy Tommy.

Today was another horrible day in a long line of horrible days. Our last panther died of exhaustion as its engine gave up the ghost no spares no ammo and literally no fuel. Stripped of all weapons we can use we left her there abandoned with her twenty kill marks showing on her barrel. Rumour has it we will return to Germany to reform our shattered ranks.
As it is till that happens we will join our greniediers as infantry.
Have enough gear to get started but clothing is an issue, lol.Have an SS Pullover smock with hat otherwise modern will be worn till a later date.

Temperatures appear to be improving. I hear of reenforcements moving up from the rear. Along with the Italians we should have a sizeable force to begin an assault on the town.
Weather reports indicate a high of 1degC.

One week out. Attack is scheduled as planned. Reconnaissance platoon reports no enemy armour in the area and we've received little in the way of artillery strikes. Let's see what Ivan is up to.

BEFEHL Nr. 01/25
Meine Herren,
A break in the weather has provided us with the opportunity to bring Ivan to heel. Presently, infantry reinforcements are en route to your sector to bolster the forthcoming attack on both the town and surrounding forest. Intelligence indicates that elements of two separate Russian Infantry Divisions are likewise being deployed to counter your efforts. You will not be deterred. Elements of the 4th Panzer Armee are poised to push through the line at your location. Your assault will clear the way for them. Success, as such, is imperative.
Your orders are simple: <<Engage and destroy any and all enemy forces within your sector>>
Additional ammunition and rations are already being distributed to your men. Ensure that each of your soldiers understands the importance of this battle with absolute clarity - they must bring a new level of pitilessness and ferocity to bear on the foe, or they will fail. There can be no half-measures on this day. Indeed – none will be tolerated.
To the forthcoming victory!
us. General Hermann Hoth Oberbefehlshaber, Armee Gruppe Sud
